I finally managed to finish the scene. I fixed the background, solved some texturing issues and I added a couple of snails to give the whole thing some life.
All objects were modelled by me from scratch in Blender. The textures were mostly hand painted, apart from a few (such as the texture on the table) which came from CGTextures.com. The scene was rendered in Blender 2.61 with Cycles.
Minor post work was done in Photoshop, mostly contrast adjustments and some colour correction.
